Somali Pirates Hijack Oil Tanker Bound for U.S.

A group of nine Somali pirates hijacked a massive oil tanker on Sunday as the vessel was off the shores of the Seychelles.

According to reports the Greek-owned Maran Centaurus had departed from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and was carrying about 300,000 tons of weight as it was bound for New Orleans. The weight of its cargo slowed the Maran Centaurus and the pirates capitalized on that fact as they quickly boarded the vessel and took the 28 crew members hostage.

Maran Tankers Management, operators of the Maran Centaurus, have said the crew is reportedly in good health and there were no injuries in the hijacking.
