U.S. President Barack Obama has reportedly issued an order for an additional 30,000 troops be deployed to Afghanistan, ending a lengthy decision process concerning the military’s next move in the embattled country.
Obama was said to have made the order following a decision on Sunday evening and will formally make the announcement on Tuesday. While Obama has opted for a hefty troop increase it still falls short of the 40,000 troops requested by U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal.
Shortly after meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton the president spoke with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and National Security Adviser James Jones before delivering the news to McChrystal and U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry.
The additional 30,000 troops would be in addition to the 68,000 U.S. troops that are already in Afghanistan.
