Stephanie Edwards Latest Victim of Tone Deaf Voters on American Idol

For all the talk that American children are falling behind the rest of the world in the areas of math and science education the most pressing issue may be the disturbing trend that our kids are going deaf at an alarming rate as evidenced by the latest vote on American Idol.

Well, if its not deafness that is causing the musically inept Idol voters to continually make mind numbingly ridiculous decisions it could be the recent cuts in fine arts education in many schools. There’s got to be a reasonable answer as to why the American Idol faithful continue to tune out a singer’s voice in a singing competition and cast their ballot for an image; hasn’t the world learned from Milli Vanilli?

Apparently not. On Wednesday the latest casualty of the American Idol farce was 19-year-old Stephanie Edwards. The Savannah, Ga. native received the lowest vote tally of the eleven contestants and was sent some 2,500 miles back to the Atlantic coastline. A rather rude sendoff when you look at those who survived the cut.

As bad as it was that Edwards was sent packing, what made it even worse was who tallied the second lowest votes. Standing next to Edwards when the vote was revealed was Chris Richardson, the 22-year-old from Chesapeake, Va.

That’s not to say that Richardson was better than Edwards, that’s just to say the two glaring omissions from the bottom two coasted through another week apparent immunity. Had Edwards been accompanied by Sanjaya Malakar or Haley Scarnato things wouldn’t have appeared as bad but instead the pair of vocally challenged had a front row seat for the public execution of an innocent contestant.

When Malakar and Scarnato are eventually voted off there will be conspiracy cries and accusations that the American Idol hands meddled with the vote. There is absolutely no way Idol would put their name on an album featuring the voice of Malakar or Scarnato despite the voting publics’ ballots. American Idol will override next weeks vote and place the two who belong in the bottom two in their appropriate place regardless of the voting results. They will do this because the show’s life depends on it.

Despite the record number of viewers that tune in to the show each week the real money behind Idol comes after the season has ended. Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, they’re all making money for Idol long since graduating from the show. Idol is well aware that Malakar won’t be attending the 2008 Grammy Awards and Scarnato won’t be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Watch out voter’s, don’t think American Idol won’t trump your freedom to vote to save their cash cow.
