Calvert DeForest, better known to late night TV viewers of David Letterman as Larry “Bud” Melman, has passed away after a long illness.
Melman, often a part of quirky skits and nonsensical bits, gained instant cult status when he made his first appearance on David Letterman’s 1982 debut of “Late Night with David Letterman” on NBC.
His character was so ingrained in Letterman’s show that when the host moved to CBS he brought Melman along.
Letterman released a statement about his friends passing saying, “Everyone always wondered if Calvert was an actor playing a character, but in reality he was just himself — a genuine, modest and nice man. To our staff and to our viewers, he was a beloved and valued part of our show, and we will miss him.”
