John Edwards announced today that he will continue to seek the Democratic presidential nomination despite news that his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, was diagnosed with cancer for the second time.
The couple held a news conference outside their home where Edwards declared, “The campaign goes on.”
Elizabeth Edwards had undergone treatment for breast cancer after the 2004 presidential election in which her husband was the Democratic vice presidential candidate. On Thursday it was revealed that doctor’s had discovered a small cancerous tumor in a rib. While not curable, the cancer is said to be treatable.
Speaking about his wife’s cancer Edwards stated “We are very optimistic about this.” He then went on to say, “You can go cower in the corner and hide or you can go out there and stand up for what you believe in. We have no intentions of cowering in the corner.”
Edwards is currently trailing Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama in national polls but he is seen as a strong candidate that could gain ground in the race for the White House.
