Manny Pacquiao Submits Candidacy for Congressional Seat in Philippines

Manny Pacquiao has submitted his candidacy for a congressional seat in the Philippines as the country nears its 2010 elections.

Pacquiao, who is a registered member of his own People’s Champ Movement party, submitted his candidacy for a representative seat for the southern province of Sarangani. The boxing champ filed his candidacy at the local election office in Alabel as several hundred supporters cheered his arrival.

Pacquiao is a national hero in the Philippines having recently captured his seventh world boxing title in seven different weight classes. He is said to be negotiating a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr., a bout that could smash pay-per-view records and earn him the largest payday in boxing history.

This is the second time Pacquiao has attempted to win office; he was defeated in the 2007 congressional election.
