Findlay Prep (Henderson, HV) Ranked No. 1 in WooEB Preseason Top 25 HS Basketball Rankings

by Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV) tops the WooEB preseason top 25 high school basketball rankings as they return several key starters and top transfers from a team that won the inaugural ESPN High School Basketball Invitational and the USA Today Super 25 national championship.

Their roster, which is led by top 15 prospects 6-2 guard Cory Joseph and 6-9 forward Tristan Thompson (Texas), boasts as many as 10 Division 1 prospects, including freshman phenom Nigel Williams-Goss.

However, Findlay is not without stark competition. St. Patrick (Elizabeth, NJ), which is led by junior phenom Michael Gilchrist and top 10 recruit Kyrie Irving (Duke), has almost as many D-1 prospects. Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD), Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) and Northland (Columbus, OH) round out the top five.

To view the top 25 and subsequent regional rankings for the 2008-09 high school basketball preseason, please look below:

National Rankings

1.      Findlay Prep, Henderson, NV

Coach: Michael Peck (65-1, 2 seasons at Findlay Prep)

Last season's record: 33-0

Outlook: Findlay Prep scrapped their fifth-year program two years and has instituted a strict four-year program, qualifying them for the high school rankings. Last season, in their second year under the new program, they went 33-0, winning the High School Basketball Invitational and earning the mythical USA Today national championship. 6-10 senior Tristan Thompson (Texas) and 6-2 senior Cory Joseph will lead the team that is expected to repeat as national champs. Thompson came in midseason after being dismissed by powerhouse St. Benedict’s Prep (Newark, NJ). He and fellow Canadian Joseph, two of the nation’s top 20 players, will be joined by 6-3 junior Nick Johnson and 6-4 junior Jabari Brown as the team’s best players. 6-6 sophomore Winston Sheppard (Hightower H.S./Sugar Land, TX) and 6-2 freshman Nigel Williams-Goss (Clackamas, OR) both transfer in to earn more experience amongst these seasoned players.

Key Games: Dec. 4 vs. Christ School (Arden, NC) at Marshall County HoopFest; Dec. 17 vs. Northland (Columbus, OH); Dec. 19-23 City of Palms Classic; Jan. 18 vs. St. Patrick (Elizabeth, NJ) at Spalding Hoophall Classic  (Springfield, MA); Jan. 28-30 Montverde Academy Invitational (Montverde, FL); Feb. 12-13 Prime Time Shootout (Rutgers University) ; Feb. 20 vs. Duncanville (TX) at SMU

2.      St. Patrick, Elizabeth, NJ

Coach: Kevin Boyle (462-128, 21 years at St. Patrick)

Last season's record: 30-3, Tournament of Champions winner

Outlook: Junior phenom Mike Gilchrist, the nation’s top player in the class of 2011, will lead the Celtics this season after the loss of Dexter Strickland, who is off to North Carolina. Gilchrist is considered by many to be the top player in the nation, regardless of class, but it doesn’t hurt that top 10 senior recruit Kyrie Irving (Duke) remains in the backcourt. To add to the team’s frontcourt depth, 6-8 senior forward Julian Washburn and 6-9 sophomore Chris Washburn transferred from Duncanville, TX, bringing two more top 100 recruits to the New Jersey powerhouse. 6-2 junior guard Derrick Gordon (Western Kentucky), 6-7 Chase Plummer (Maryland-Baltimore County), 6-7 senior Josh Daniel (Wagner) and 5-11 guard Kevin Boyle, Jr., the son of the head coach, return after playing significant time last season. They will be joined by talented freshmen 6-8 Austin Colbert and 6-5 Jason Boswell.

Key Games: Dec. 26-30 at MaxPreps Holiday Classic (San Diego); Jan. 18 vs. Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV) at Spalding Hoophall Classic (Springfield, MA); Jan. 23 vs. St. Benedict’s; Jan. 30 vs. White Station (Memphis, TN) at Newark (NJ) National Invitational; Feb. 6 vs. Taft (Woodland Hills, CA) in Nike Extravaganza (Santa Ana, CA); Feb. 12 vs. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA) and Feb. 13 vs. Rice (New York, NY) at Prime Time Shootout (Rutgers University)

3.      Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson, VA

Coach: Steve Smith (718-44, 23 years at Oak Hill)

Last season's record: 34-4

Outlook: The Warriors will return three starters, including 6-4 five-star prospect guard Doron Lamb. Lamb, who transferred last year from Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn, NY, will lead the team who lost to Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV) in the National High School Invitational and finished #2 in the USA Today rankings. 6-2 senior Pe'Shon Howard and 6-11 senior Baye Mousa Keita (Syracuse), who hails from Senegal, also return for the Warriors. Top 50 recruit Roscoe Smith transfers in from Walbrook (Baltimore) to add versatility to the frontcourt, while 5-11 senior guard Juwan Staten (Dayton) and 6-4 junior transfer Keith Hornsby will add to the backcourt.

The team’s depth comes from a myriad of transfers in 6-0 sophomore LaBrent Walker (Hillside HS, Jamaica, NY), 6-6 junior Paul Gombwer (Nigeria), 6-6 sophomore Michael Carrera (Venezuela), and 6-3 sophomore Nazareth Long (Canada).

Key Games: Dec. 17-22 Iolani Classic (Honolulu, HI); Jan. 28-30 Montverde Academy Tournament (Montverde, FL); Feb. 13 vs. St. Anthony (Jersey City, NJ) at Primetime Shootout (Rutgers University); March 6 vs. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, VA); April 1-3 at National High School Invitational

5.      Northland, Columbus, OH

Outlook: The Vikings return three starters from last year’s state title team: 6-9 senior Jared Sullinger (Ohio State), 6-6 senior forward J.D. Weatherspoon (Ohio State) and 5-9 guard Trey Burke (Penn State). Sullinger is considered the nation’s top post player and top five overall recruit, while Weatherspoon is ranked in the top 75. They will be joined by 6-5 senior guard Kareem Jamar, 6-10 senior center Reggie Murphy, and 5-10 senior guard Denzel Douglas in the starting lineup. 6-7 senior forward Mario Nored, 6-6 senior forward Marquise Washington, 6-4 junior forward Tre’vonne Williams and 6-4 junior Bre’lon Leverette will add depth in the frontcourt.

Despite the loss, the Stags are stacked for the next couple of years as they are led by a mixture of seniors and juniors. Led by 6-0 junior guard Quinn Cook and 6-4 senior Jerian Grant (Notre Dame), DeMatha still has one of the nation’s best backcourts. Joining them are 6-4 senior Victor Oladipo (Indiana) and 6-0 sophomore James Robinson.
