According to a pathologists report, Bob Woolmer, the national coach of Pakistan’s cricket team, was murdered. The 58-year-old was found in his hotel room covered in blood and vomit shortly after his side lost a match to Ireland in the cricket World Cup being played in Jamaica.
The loss eliminated Pakistan, a world power in the sport of cricket, from the competition and left several of their fans disenchanted with their side.
While Woolmer’s death is being labeled a homicide police have yet to make an arrest or identify any suspects. The pathologists report indicated that Woolmer died from “asphyxia as a result of manual strangulation,” leading police to believe that more than one person could have been involved in the murder. Mark Shields, the deputy police commissioner in Jamaica, stated "Because Bob was a large man; it would have taken some significant force to subdue him.”
Many in the cricket community believe that those tied to gambling interest could have committed the murder due to the early exit in the World Cup. That angle is already being investigated by the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit.
Police fingerprinted Pakistani players but have cleared them to leave the island on Friday.
