Taliban Vows to Step Up Afghan Fight in Response to U.S. Troop Increase

The Taliban has said they will step up their fight in Afghanistan in response to the recent news that the U.S. will increase their troop presence within the country.

On Tuesday President Barack Obama announced plans to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan in an effort to further secure the region. Obama made the decision for further deployments after spending three months listening to top advisers, declaring “I have determined that it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 US troops to Afghanistan.”

That declaration was delivered as Obama addressed cadets at West Point, telling the military academy “We must reverse the Taliban's momentum and deny it the ability to overthrow the government.”

Shortly after the announcement a Taliban spokesman scoffed at Obama’s decision, saying the troop increase would only “provoke stronger resistance.” According to a report published by AFP news agency the Taliban spokesman went on to say “Obama will witness lots of coffins heading to America from Afghanistan.”

As part of Obama’s decision to increase troop levels the U.S. would also ask NATO allies for an additional 5,000 to 7,000 troops.
