Iran Announces Plans to Enrich its Own Uranium, Ignores International Demands

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has announced that his country would ignore international demands and continue enriching its own uranium.

Ahmadinejad said Iran would enrich uranium up to 20%, far exceeding the 3% needed for civilian nuclear power but well short of the 90% needed for weapons grade uranium. The controversial leader has insisted Iran’s nuclear program is for civilian purposes but many in the international community fear the uranium is being used for nuclear weapons.

To resolve the standstill the UN proposed Iran ship its uranium out of the country for enrichment, that way it could be regulated but Ahmadinejad has balked at that proposal saying the UN had imposed too many conditions.

Iran has already scoffed at a resolution passed by the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency that condemned the country’s efforts to cover-up a nuclear facility near Qom. The UN has already placed sanctions on Iran, preventing certain items from reaching Iran that could be used to develop nuclear weapons.
