Jeff Green squeezed his way in between two defenders and hit a desperation jumper with 2.5 seconds left on the clock to lift the number two seeded Georgetown Hoyas past the number six seeded Vanderbilt Commodores 66-65 and advance to the Elite Eight.
Green’s game winner came after Dan Cage had put the Commodores up by one with two free-throws with 17.9 seconds to play. The Hoyas put the ball in the hands of the Big East player of the year and despite the double-team Green found a way to bank the jumper and put the Hoyas in the Elite Eight for the first time in 11 years.
The Hoyas started the game off hitting their first two shots but then faild to make a field goal over the next six minutes as Vanderbilt took an 18-6 lead. After Georgetown ran off six straight the Commodores answered with seven of their own and the Hoyas once again fell into an offensive slump, not hitting from the floor for over five and a half minutes.
With Vandy up 27-14 the Hoyas went on a 10-0 run to get within three with 1:41 left in the first half. Cage then hit a three-pointer and Derrick Byers followed that with a layup and the Commodores went to the locker room with a 32-24 lead.
Georgetown started the second half on a 7-1 run to pull within two and DaJuan Summers buried a three less than two minutes later to tie the score at 36-36. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the game with neither team able to build a lead greater than four.
Green and Summers each finished with 15 points to lead the Hoyas while Byars and Cage finished with 17 points each for the Commodores.
