Bus Explosion at Damascus Gas Station Kills Three

A bus explosion at a gas station in the Syrian capital of Damascus has killed at least three people and left several more injured.

Officials have ruled out an attack, saying the blast was caused when a tire exploded as it was being inflated. While officials have blamed the explosion on a blown tire the damage caused by the blast left many believing the bus may have been bombed.

The bus had been carrying Iranian pilgrims who were visiting the Sayyida Zeinab shrine for Shia Muslims. Last year a car bomb killed 17 pilgrims who were heading to the shrine; that attack was blamed on Sunni militants.

Thursday’s explosion did not kill any pilgrims but claimed the lives of the driver and two station workers.
