Georgetown Overcomes 11-Point Second Half Deficit to Beat UNC in Overtime

Trailing by as many as 11-points and down by ten with 6:02 remaining in the game, the number two seeded Georgetown Hoyas found a way to battle back and beat the number one seeded North Carolina Tar Heels 96-84 in overtime to advance to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament.

Georgetown had jumped out to a quick start against the Tar Heels in the first half and led 22-15 after Jonathan Wallace hit a three-pointer with 13:46 left in the half. UNC responded with an 11-0 run to take a 26-22 lead, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish until Wallace buried a three-pointer with 32 seconds left in the game to force overtime.

The Tar Heels had gone in front by ten after Marcus Ginyard hit a pair of free-throws with 7:19 left in the game but over the next three and a half minutes UNC could find the bottom of the bucket and Georgetown had chipped their lead down to three.

That three point lead remained until Wallace drilled a triple to force the game into overtime. In the extra period it was all Hoyas as they ran off the first 14 points in the frame before Ty Lawson could hit a three with 8 seconds left. DaJuan Summers scored eight of his 20 points in overtime while Jeff Green finished with 22 points and 9 rebounds and Roy Hibbert ended up with 13 points and 11 boards and 6 blocked shots.

Tyler Hansbrough led the Tar Heels with 26 points and 11 rebounds but UNC shot just 35 percent from the floor and had 11 shots blocked.
