Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard each scored 28 points and Jason Terry added 27 points and 6 assists as the Dallas Mavericks (58-11) beat the Atlanta Hawks (27-44) 104-97 for their sixth straight win on Sunday.
The Mavericks jumped on the Hawks early, starting the game on a 15-4 run and by the end of the first quarter had built a 39-19 lead. Atlanta began to slowly chip away at the deficit and by the end of the second quarter they trailed 58-44.
Atlanta started the third quarter on a 9-4 run and before Dallas knew it their lead was down to seven. After a timeout the Mavericks made up for the slow start with five straight and bumped their lead back to twelve. The Hawks continued to battle though and at the end of the third quarter trailed by eight.
After Salim Stoudemire hit one of two free-throws and Tyronn Lue scored five straight the Hawks were back to within two early in the fourth quarter. Zaza Pachulia then tied the score with a pair of free-throws and Josh Childress gave the Hawks their first lead of the game 79-77 with a dunk three and a half minutes into the fourth.
Dallas quickly ran of six unanswered and were back up four. Josh Smith hit one of two from the line for Atlanta to put the score at 83-80 but Dallas then hit three three-pointers and grabbed an eight point advantage. Terry added a jumper against his former team to put Dallas up 94-84 with 2:49 left in the game and Atlanta was just out of gas.
Both Josh Childress and Josh Smith scored 21 points for Atlanta while Zaza Pachulia added 14 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
