Comcast Corp. is purchasing NBC Universal from GE as a means of acquiring more movies and television shows. Comcast believes the buy will provide security and power in the event the company loses cable TV subscribers to online videos video online.
The move is representative of a trend in entertainment with the avenue mattering less and the content mattering more. Comcast is realizing that in order to stay afloat it needs to be more than a cable TV network and begin providing some of that content with its furst attempt being to buy Disney for $54 billion in 2004.
Comcast has slowly begun gaining increasing amounts of content snatching up developing cable networks like E!, but 95 percent of the company’s revenue still comes from its cable services. The popularity of a network channel like NBC; however, has the potential to change that and help Comcast move into the future.
