Kevin Durant received 72 votes from a 72-member national media panel to become a unanimous selection to this year’s First Team AP All-American. The Texas Longhorns freshman averaged 25.6 points per game while pulling down 11.3 rebounds and was named Big 12 Player of the Year.
Joining Durant on the AP All-American First Team was fellow freshman Greg Oden of Ohio State. Oden averaged 15.5 points per game and grabbed 9.7 rebounds per contest to lead the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Conference title. Oden has also played a lead role in Ohio State’s current NCAA Tournament run.
Durant and Oden are the first freshman to be named to the AP All-American First Team since LSU’s Chris Jackson was bestowed the honor in 1990.
Both the Big 12 and Big Ten landed two players each on the First Team.
While the Longhorns were represented by Durant, Acie Law used a superb season at Texas A&M to earn First Team honors. Law averaged 17.9 points per game and 5.3 assists in the Aggies campaign this season.
In addition to Oden, the Big Ten saw their Player of the Year, Alando Tucker, named to the AP All-American First Team. Tucker averaged 19.9 points per game and 5.4 rebounds and led the Wisconsin Badgers to a number one national ranking earlier this year.
Rounding out the AP All-American First team was junior Arron Afflalo from UCLA. Afflalo was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year after averaging 16.7 points per game.
