Militant Attack at Pakistani Mosque Leaves at least 40 Dead, Several Injured

At least 40 people were killed and several more left injured after a group of armed men entered a mosque near the Pakistani army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi and opened fire.

Many of the worshippers in attendance had been members of the country’s military staff and when the gunmen began firing the security forces were able to return fire. A battle between the gunmen and security forces lasted for about an hour until three of the militants blew themselves up.

Many reports have indicated that the attackers had known that military staff would be at the mosque and while they were the target of the attack at least 16 of those killed were children.

While there have been no claims of responsibility for the attack the Pakistani Taliban have carried out similar attacks in the past.
