UNC Student Mascot Succumbs to Injuries After Being Struck by Car

University of North Carolina student Jason Ray past died from injuries he received Friday afternoon when an SUV struck him while he was walking alongside a highway shoulder near his hotel.

The accident occurred in New Jersey where Ray had been carrying on his role as team Mascot for the Tar Heels basketball team participating in the NCAA Tournament. For the past three years the 21-year-old Ray had donned the uniform of Ramses the Ram and entertained the UNC faithful at sporting events.

Ray had been on his way to a convenience store when he was hit from behind. The driver of the SUV immediately called 911 and tried to assist the UNC student. The man had a valid driver’s license and was not suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the accident occurred.

Jason Ray was set to graduate in May of this year after majoring in business administration and minoring in religious studies.
