The 2010 World Cup draw for South Africa is now complete and the tournament’s host will get things started against Mexico on June 11. Joining South Africa and Mexico in Group A play will be Uruguay and France, both sides capable of finding their way into the next round.
Already being dubbed the Group of Death, Group G will open with Brazil facing North Korea on June 15 and Portugal squaring off against the Ivory Coast. While North Korea may be considered a sacrificial lamb of sorts the remaining three are all legitimate contenders for the finals. Ivory Coast is one f the hottest sides entering the World Cup while Brazil and Portugal are world powers in the sport.
A sigh of relief was let out in the U.S. when they found themselves in Group C alongside England, Algeria and Slovenia. The United States has never played Algeria or Slovenia and the last time they faced England in the World Cup was in 1950, a 1-0 victory that is still considered one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history. The Americans will be facing the English in their first match on June 12.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the second round.
