In a recently released video, Lori Blaker discusses the third of the WEP principles while speaking to a group of students at Walsh College in Troy, Michigan. The Women’s Empowerment Principles is a joint initiative between the UN Global Compact and UN Women. Business leaders are encouraged to use the seven Women’s Empowerment Principles as guide posts for actions that advance and empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community.
In a question and answer format Blaker was asked how TTi Global identified security issues for employees traveling to work and on business related trips. Blaker acknowledge the issue,” I know my family worries about me when I travel. I worry about all of my people when they travel whether it they are a man or a woman. In our local markets we have to take a look at the situation, not only in that particular country but in every major city that we work because it is different all over the world.”
Blaker then sited a specific example. “We recently had an incident in our India office. The team wanted to add a second shift. The issue that came up was the security of women who would be traveling home after the second shift. In that market it is a normal course of business to provide transportation. So if we were going to add a second shift we would have to provide employees transportation home. These are some of the things you have to take a look at and every market is always different.”
When asked if TTi Global had policies against all forms of violence in the workplace, Blaker answered in the affirmative, “It is clearly stated in our employee handbook that there is an absolute zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment or violence in our workplace. I hope that all of our employees in all of our markets feel comfortable speaking up if that situation should ever arise. I can’t really think of an instance in our organization where it has occurred, but we clearly need to have policies spelled out that our employees understand.
Blaker then explained how these policies are enforced,” Our Global HR Director has weekly, monthly and quarterly conference calls with all of our HR Directors around the world to make sure they understand the zero tolerance policies. To make certain that there hasn’t been any issues that have risen that we need to deal with immediately. What is important is that you have a culture in your company where people feel that can speak up without fear of retribution, that what’s import in any organization.”
