Addiction Can Be Source of Holiday Depression

Although it is a common belief that depression causes addiction, it actually is the other way around. Depression occurs most times after the person has become addicted to drugs and alcohol. Rehabs, like the Narconon program in Louisiana, work with the individual to free them of depression in order to achieve permanent sobriety from drugs and alcohol. There are three different factors that create depression in an addict; they are physical, social and mental factors.

Physically, most addicts suffer from poor health and extreme laziness. When an addict consumes drugs and alcohol they no longer feel any physical pain, in fact they “feel” better physically than they ever have. When the drugs or alcohol wear off, the individual has little to no energy and their minor aches and pains intensify. This is one of the reasons why it is so hard to stay away from drugs and alcohol. Soon after a person becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol their social lives begin to suffer as well. The addict’s only motivation is to acquire more drugs or alcohol. This leaves little time for activities once enjoyed by the individual. In most cases, jobs are lost, businesses are destroyed, marriages crumble and children are abandoned.

This lack of social outlet further sends the addict into a state of depression associated with addiction. Often times, an addict will have difficulty finding joy or happiness in anything while they are not under the influence. Drugs or alcohol have such a hold on a person that they no longer have the desire to do anything without the aid of some substance. The addict truly believes and operates on the principle that nothing is that good unless they are high. Unfortunately what occurs is that they are numb to the fact that the quality of life and relationships with others are actually falling apart.

During the holiday season feelings of depression are at their peak. Addicts are faced with being in an environment that they have actively harmed and actively worked against throughout their addiction. While everyone else is celebrating and enjoying the holidays, addicts are living in a world of depression and pain as a direct result of their addiction. However, this holiday season can be different. Addiction and its resulting depression can be handled with successful rehabilitation.

Narconon Louisiana, a long-term inpatient facility located in Baton Rouge is no stranger to handling addicts during the holidays. Stably achieving an unheard of 75% success rate for permanent recovery, Narconon does not subscribe to the idea that addiction is a disease. Instead they work with the individual and find out what problems drugs are a solution to through life skills courses designed to raise the ability of the individual.

The Narconon program also uses a unique detoxification process unlike any others to help reduce physical drug cravings and stop relapse. This holiday season give your loved one the gift of sobriety and allow them to live a life free from the debilitating thoughts of depression. Call Narconon Louisiana at 866-422-4650.
