Guinea’s Vice President Sekouba Konate has returned to the country and will now take charge following an assassination attempt on President Moussa Dadis Camara on Thursday.
Reports on Camara’s condition have varied as a spokeswoman for the president said he had been flown to Morocco for a “minor operation” and his life was not in danger while other reports said he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and his condition was more serious.
Officials have blamed an aide to Camara for the attack, saying Major Aboubacar Diakite was responsible for orchestrating the assassination attempt. Camara’s driver and a bodyguard were killed in the attack and Diakite is now said to be on the run.
Konate had been in Lebanon on business when the assassination attempt was launched but flew back on Saturday to take the reins while Camara is hospitalized.
