College Football Scores: Cincinnati Bearcats Stun Pittsburgh Panthers, Clinch Big East Title and BCS Bowl with Dramatic Comeback

Tony Pike found Armon Binns on a 29-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds left in the game and Jake Rogers followed with the extra point to lift the Cincinnati Bearcats (12-0) past the Pittsburgh Panthers (9-3) 45-44 on Saturday to clinch the Big East title and lock up a BCS bowl berth and possibly a BCS national title shot.

Binns’ game-winning touchdown didn’t look likely back in the second quarter as the Panthers had a 31-10 advantage and Cincinnati’s perfect season looked like a thing of the past. That all changed when the Bearcats grabbed the momentum heading into the half with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Mardy Gilyard to give Cincinnati hope at 31-17.

Gilyard was the only one to find the endzone in the third quarter as he hauled in a 68-yard TD toss from Pike to get the Bearcats to within 31-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

Pittsburgh stopped the bleeding with a 15-yard touchdown run from Dion Lewis early in the fourth to build a 14-point cushion but the Bearcats offense was hitting its stride and Pike put them back on the scoreboard with an 8-yard pass to D.J. Woods but the extra point failed and Cincinnati was trailing 38-30. It wouldn’t be long before the Bearcats managed to overcome that miscue as Isaiah Pead scored on a one-yard run and then Gilyard and Pike hooked up on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 38-38.

Sensing the game slipping away the Panthers regrouped and put together what appeared to be the game-winning drive as Lewis scored on a 5-yard run up the middle with 1:36 left on the clock. The celebration shifted though as the extra point was mishandled and left the Panthers with a 44-38 lead and Cincinnati had one more shot.

Pike, who had a dreadful opening half, finished off a beautiful second half with a series of controlled passes and eventually hitting Binns on the 29-yard game-winner as Rogers’ extra point was true and the Bearcats celebrated with the Big East title and automatic BCS bowl berth.
