On tonight’s episode of American Idol the ten remaining contestants will finally get a chance to perform the type of music they would most likely churn out if they were to win. Pop music. While the ten have had the opportunity to cover songs from Diana Ross to the influential bands of the British Invasion it is the pop genre that American Idol is all about and what the voters know.
Grammy-Award winning artist Gwen Stefani will be featured on American Idol and the contestants will be performing the songs that have inspired the trendsetter. That could be an eclectic mix of early 80’s bands that might sound obscure to some of the younger viewers on the show. If you’re ready to hear your favorite Club Nouveau, The Cure, or Madness song covered by one of these contestants tonight’s the night to tune in.
The good news for the American Idol contestants is that Stefani has been influenced by a pretty diverse group of artists that could fit the style of each contestant while still remaining in the pop genre.
If you can’t see Lakisha Jones singing “Our House” or Blake Lewis beat-boxing a Robert Smith song, fear not Stefani is still a big fan of Madonna and Prince. But Stefani has never come out and said Paula Abdul was much of an influence so if you hear “Opposites Attract,” you’re probably turned to the wrong channel.
This could also be a night where you hear Simon Cowell at his best. The biting American Idol judge knows what sells and will be completely honest if any of the contestants flub the sound.
