Mark Ingram collected 113 yards rushing and three touchdowns while adding another 76 yards receiving with a pair of catches, Greg McElroy was an efficient 12/18 passing for 239 yards and a TD and the defense of the Alabama Crimson Tide (13-0) dominated the second half in a 32-13 win over the Florida Gators (12-1), locking up the SEC title and earning a berth in the BCS national title game.
Alabama jumped to a 3-0 lead on their opening drive as Leigh Tiffin kicked a 48-yard field goal and after the Gators were held on their first possession the Tide came back and put more points on the board as Mark Ingram scored on a 7-yard run but Tiffin missed the extra point to leave the score at 9-0. The Gators managed to get their first points of the game late in the frame as Caleb Sturgis kicked a 48-yard field goal and it was a six-point game heading into the second.
Tiffin gave the Tide a nine-point cushion midway through the second when his 34-yard field goal split the uprights but the Gators countered with a drive that was capped by a 23-yard touchdown toss from Tim Tebow to David Nelson to cut their deficit to 12-10. Alabama wasted little time getting those points back though as McElroy hooked up with Ingram on a 69 yard pass that put the Tide on the Gators three-yard-line and one play later Ingram was in the endzone for a 19-10 lead. Florida managed to add a Sturgis field goal just before the half and the Gators, despite being outplayed over the first two quarters, remained in the game at 19-13.
The Gators got the ball to open the third quarter but the Tide defense held, forcing Florida to punt. McElroy then led a five-play drive that ended with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Colin Peek to push the Alabama advantage to 26-13. Alabama’s defense once again held Tebow and the high-powered offense of the Gators and the Tide’s offense then went on a huge 8:47 drive that ate up the rest of the third quarter and finished with a one-yard TD run from Ingram and the score was 32-13 after the two-point attempt failed.
Things went from bad to worse for the Gators as Tebow was intercepted on their next possession and while the Tide didn’t put any point sup on their drive they managed to chew up a couple minutes before punting away. Florida managed to get down to Alabama’s 13-yard line but on a fourth-and-three Tebow couldn’t connect with David Nelson and the Gators turned the ball over on downs. That was all the Tide needed as the offense kept the ball for the remaining 7:28 to preserve the win and clinch the SEC title. Alabama will now have to wait to see who they will face in the BCS title game.
