Protesters took to the streets of Athens on Sunday marking the one-year anniversary of the fatal police shooting that claimed the life of a 15-year-old. The march quickly turned violent as protesters hurled rocks and bottles at police who responded by firing tear gas to break up the demonstrations.
In preparation for the march officials positioned 6,000 police on the streets of Athens, anticipating large demonstrations. It was one year ago that Alexandros Grigoropoulos was gunned down after an altercation between a group of youths and police. That incident triggered massive protests across Greece and wide-scale rioting and looting paralyzed the country.
Attempting to avoid the same level of chaos police carried out a series of raids on Saturday and made several arrests prior to Sunday’s march. The government, headed by Prime Minister George Papandreou, has warned that there would be a zero tolerance policy regarding violence and there have already been hundreds of arrests.
