Heather Mills continued to impress the judges of Dancing with the Stars as she opened up her mambo with a near perfect back walkover. After receiving loud applause from the audience Mills was flooded with compliments from the judges who remarked that the level of difficulty involved with her opening move far surpassed those attempted by the other women.
Mills received a total of 24 out of 30 for her performance, and tied her for third along with Joey Fatone on the night. Heading into tonight’s first vote Mills has accumulated 42 points out of a possible 60 and should be safe from elimination.
While Mills owned the night she certainly wasn’t the only star dancing at the top of their game. Laila Ali earned top marks for the evening garnering 27 points and brining her two dance total to 50, highest among the eleven competitors. Olympic gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno proved that his best moves might not be on the ice as he was awarded 26 points for his quickstep and now has a combined score of 47 points.
Former NSync member Joey Fatone continued to use his boy-band experience to move his way across the dance floor for 24 points and now sits at 48, trailing only Ali in the points race.
With the first vote-off on Dancing with the Stars set for tonight the most likely to have their dancing shoes retired for them will be Billy Ray Cyrus or Clyde Drexler. Cyrus showed some improvement over his week one 13 and picked up 21 points last night while Drexler’s 18 was two points higher than he received a week earlier. With both sitting on 34 points it’s up to the public who they will boot. Of course voters could select Leeza Gibbons whose combined score is a 36 or John Ratzenberger, now at 38 points.
Drexler’s 18 was the low score on the night but Shandi Finnessey totaled just 20 points and was criticized by the judges for a lack of movement, an essential quality when dancing.
It comes down to likeability in the first vote and with the bottom five running pretty close the vote could be a bit surprising. Drexler is an NBA world champion, Ratzenberger was everybody’s favorite mailman, Gibbons brought us Hollywood’s latest news, Finnessey won the Miss USA crown, Billy Ray Cyrus gave us “Achy Breaky Heart.” Judging by those descriptions it could be Billy Ray’s time.
