Maine Republicans got behind Democratic Governor John Baldacci’s pledge to not seek a tax increase as a means to close the $383 budget gap.
After Baldacci made his pledge this weekend on a radio address, Republicans responded through Minority Leader Josh Tardy, saying not only that they agree, but also that raising taxes in a recession is counterproductive and unfair to Maine inhabitants.
Tardy added that the problem of falling revenues is worsened by recession-related investment losses, which affect the state retirement system.
The details of his budget-cutting proposals, Baldacci said this weekend, will be given on December 18.
