Led by Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska, a bipartisan group of senators has released an amendment to the Senate’s health care bill that would put severe restrictions on abortion coverage.
The issue could threaten passage of the overall health care bill because Nelson says he won’t vote for the bill without the abortion language, which liberals say they won’t support.
The amendment prevents any private insurance company that gets federal money from covering abortions—basically most insurers under the new bill, since they will benefit from new government health subsidies for low-income people
A new government insurance plan would also be barred from covering abortion except in limited cases.
