The winter holidays are upon us as will be their incumbent cheer and celebration. It is a time for family get togethers and for showing one another how much we care. However, if one has a drug or alcohol problem the pain of guilt can be even stronger this time of year for nearly the same reasons.
We all have experienced guilt at some time or another. The primary reason for it stems from doing something one knows well he shouldn't do and then feeling bad about it after. This could be something small or large; in either case the feeling is the same, only the intensity may change.
If someone has a drug or alcohol problem, they constantly struggle with guilt. An addict begins taking drugs to solve some problem or discomfort they have. Mental and physical complications will result from the use of drugs. The addict may be unhappy with their relationship or in crowds so they drink or take drugs to "loosen up". After the initial effects, physically, his body will crave the drug. Mentally he felt relief when he took the drug. This gives him all the more reason to continue to take the drug a second or third time.
Since the addict is doing something he knows is wrong or harmful, he begins to feel guilty. Most addicts, basically, are good people and have a sense of right and wrong and don't harbor intentions to hurt others. However, as addiction progresses, the cravings for drugs can grow to a point where they begin to compromise their own sense of right and wrong to obtain more and more of the drug. With each misdeed their guilt grows. Lying, stealing, cheating are not uncommon partners with addiction.
The guilt increases especially during the holiday season when the addicted person has to face many of the people he has hurt as a result of the addiction. Again, as the person is basically good, he regrets his misdeeds. The guilt is such an uncomfortable feeling the addict may turn to more drugs and alcohol to get some temporary relief from this unwanted feeling. This locks him deeper and deeper into the trap of addiction.
The Narconon program in Michigan directly deals with the factors behind the guilt through precise techniques that have been developed and are in use in the Narconon program that enable an addict to obtain relief from his past misdeeds and obtain a new fresh viewpoint of life. This step is done in it's proper sequence during the Narconon program. The result of doing this step is the addict is no longer trapped in his past misdeeds and can go forward in life free from the guilt associated with them and can conquer his addiction.
