Tarence Kinsey scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Pau Gasol finished with 10 points 16 rebounds and 7 assists and Rudy Gay added 20 points and 12 boards as the Memphis Grizzlies (18-54) shocked the Los Angeles Lakers (38-33) 88-86 at the Staples Center.
L.A. jumped to a 12 point lead after the first quarter as Kobe Bryant scored nine and appeared ready for another big game. That lead was bolstered to 15 when Shammond Williams hit a three-pointer early in the second and L.A. was up 32-17. Memphis staged an 8-0 run to bring the score to 32-25 but Bryant hit a three-pointer to move the Lakers lead to ten. Smush Parker followed Bryant’s triple with a three of his own and Los Angeles was clearly in control. By the end of the half the Lakers lead was 49-41.
Rudy Gay came out on fire in the third and scored ten points for the Grizzlies. By the end of the third quarter Memphis had taken advantage of the cold shooting Lakers and were up 68-63.
Memphis managed just three points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter but Los Angeles was just as cold and the Grizzlies were still able to hold a two point lead. Luke Walton hit a three-pointer with 1:15 left in the game to tie the score 81-81 but Tarence Kinsey answered with a triple of his own and the Grizzlies were back up three.
Kinsey then put the Grizzlies up by five but Bryant hit a three-pointer to bring the Lakers within two with 9 seconds left in the game. Los Angeles had a chance to win the game but Smush Parker missed a three-pointer. Kobe grabbed the offensive rebound but the put-back was blocked by Gasol.
Bryant finished with 23 points in the game but was just 7-26 from the field.
