Former MLB Pitcher, Ugueth Urbina, Sentenced to 14-Years for Attempted Murder
Ugueth Urbina, a former major league baseball pitcher for six different teams, received a 14-year prison sentence in a Venezuelan prison for attempted murder. The 31-year-old closer had been accused of attacking five workers on his ranch in Venezuela.
Urbina has denied any involvement in the altercation that involved a group of men attacking the workers with machetes. He has insisted that he was asleep at the time of the incident.
According to the 11-year veteran, he had discovered the workers swimming in the pool and scolded them but nothing more. Urbina contends that he then left and went to sleep.
The hard throwing right hander was a key pick-up for the Florida Marlins in the middle of the 2003 season. The Marlins won the World Series with Urbina recording two saves in the process.
Urbina led the National League in saves in 1999 when he closed out 41 games for the Montreal Expos. He also spent time with the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. He had a 44-49 record with 237 saves in eleven seasons.
