A series of car bombs in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad have killed at least 127 people and left more than 450 injured.
The five bombs went off in succession, one targeting a police patrol in the Dora district while the other four were positioned near official buildings. Authorities have already placed blame on al-Qaeda, saying the militants were attempting to destabilize the government ahead of next year’s general elections.
That belief was backed by the buildings targeted in the attack, all state-run, including the Institute of Fine Art. Officials have said al-Qaeda is attempting to send a message to citizens that the government is incapable of protecting its own people from attacks.
In addition to the police patrol and Institute of Fine Art the bombs struck near the health ministry, interior ministry and a university.
