Turkey to Consider Banning Country’s Leading Kurdish Party

Turkey’s Constitutional Court is said to be considering the possibility of banning the country’s primary Kurdish party, the Democratic Society Party (DTP), due to its suspected support of Kurdish separatist rebels.

While Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed a desire to expand the rights of Kurdish citizens the court’s decision could have a negative effect on that initiative. A party leader of the DTP has already said any effort to institute a ban would cause a greater rift with the Kurdish minority.

The ban on the DTP is being considered due in large part to its alleged ties with the Kurdish separatist PKK. For more than 25 years the PKK has taken up arms against the Turkish government in an effort to establish their independence and the DTP has been accused of supporting those efforts.

As it stands the DTP holds 21 seats in the 550-member parliament, the largest percentage of seats for any one Kurdish party.

A decision on whether the county will ban the DTP could be made within days or several weeks.
