Jordan’s King Abdullah has called upon a former palace aide, Samir al-Rafai, to become the country’s new prime minister, a decision announced after the king accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Nader al-Dahabi.
That resignation was widely expected following King Abdullah’s decision to dissolve parliament last month. Abdullah appeared frustrated with Dahabi and his cabinet’s inability to push through election law changes. It will now be Rafai’s responsibility to form a cabinet that will push through a series of reforms the king feels necessary to boost the country’s economy.
Abdullah is believed to be seeking political and economic reforms as a means of reducing parliament’s power.
