Kevin Durant was named the Associated Press’ Player of the Year, becoming the first freshman to ever win the college basketball award.
Durant led the Texas Longhorns to a 25-10 record on the after averaging 25.8 points per game and grabbing 11.1 rebounds. The 18-year-old had already been named Big 12 Player of the Year as well as Freshman of the Year.
With 20 double-doubles to his credit Durant completed one of the most sensational freshman campaigns in memory. Among the awards already bestowed upon the 6’9 guard/forward are: the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Adolph Rupp Trophy, ESPN Player of the Year and NABC Division I Player of the Year. Durant was also a unanimous selection to the AP All-America First Team.
Durant was nearly a unanimous selection for AP Player of the Year with only two members of the 72-member panel casting a different ballot. Wisconsin’s Alando Tucker received the two votes that escaped Durant.
