The Honduran government has postponed its plans to exile ousted President Manuel Zelaya to Mexico after the two sides disagreed upon the terms of the proposed agreement.
According to reports the Honduran government wants Zelaya to apply for political asylum before leaving for Mexico, a move the former leader has refused to do. Zelaya has said “I haven't requested asylum, I don't want asylum and I won't accept asylum.”
Seeking asylum could potentially limit Zelaya’s political efforts from abroad and the former leader still refuses to recognize the legitimacy of the recent presidential elections. Zelaya was removed from power in June and forced into exile but eventually made his way back into the country where he holed up at the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa.
Zelaya, along with many of his supporters, argued that he should be allowed to serve out the final two months of his term yet the interim government ignored those calls. Last month Porfirio Lobo was elected the country’s new president, ending the interim rule of Roberto Micheletti.
