U.S. President Barack Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize during a ceremony in Oslo, Norway on Thursday. Ironically, Obama used his acceptance speech to defend the U.S. war in Afghanistan while stressing the importance of upholding moral standards.
Obama was announced as the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner in October for what was described as his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples.” Less than two months later Obama approved an additional 30,000 troops for Afghanistan. While that decision angered some Obama dismissed those concerns stating, “A non-violent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies. Negotiations cannot convince al-Qaeda's leaders to lay down their arms.”
There were many who argued that awarding Obama the Nobel Peace Prize was premature, having not even served a year in office before being named the winner. Obama didn’t disagree with those detractors, saying, “Compared to some of the giants of history who have received this prize... my accomplishments are slight.”
Despite those “slight” accomplishments Obama gained favor among those who vote for the award for his potential for change and his representation of hope on a global scale.
