Dirk Nowitzki scored 17 of his 30 point sin the fourth quarter and Josh Howard added 20 points and 8 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks (61-11) beat the New York Knicks (31-41) 105-103 for their ninth straight win.
Nowitzki took over late in the fourth quarter scoring 9 points in the final 1:55 and Howard was able to block Stephon Marbury’s last second shot to secure the win.
Marbury scored 16 points in the first quarter to give the Knicks a seven point advantage after the opening period.
Dallas was able to cut into the Knicks lead with a pair of three-pointer from Jerry Stackhouse and after Howard hit a layup with 6:48 on the clock the game was tied 40-40. The Mavericks then used an 8-2 run to close the half and went into the break with a 57-53 lead.
The Mavericks bumped their lead to ten in the third quarter after Devin Harris hit a pair of free-throws and it looked as if the Knicks were about to buckle. Rather than fade away, the Knicks scored the next six points and closed the half on a 6-0 run to even the score at 76-76.
Both teams traded buckets in the fourth and neither side could gain an advantage greater than three points after six minutes had past. Mardy Collins put the Knicks up by three with 2:11 left in the game but that’s when Nowitzki took over and put the Mavericks in front for good with a pair of free-throws with 26 seconds left in the game. Jason Terry added a free-throw with 17 seconds to give the Mavs a 105-103 lead before Marbury’s final shot was blocked.
Marbury finished the night with 43 points but the Knicks fell short at the foul line hitting 70 percent while the Mavericks hit 89 percent.
