Brian Kelly has been named the new head football coach of Notre Dame, ending a brief search by the Irish following the firing of Charlie Weis.
Kelly led the Cincinnati Bearcats to a perfect 12-0 record and a Big East title in 2009 en route to a BCS bowl berth, the Sugar Bowl, where the team will face the Florida Gators. The 47-year-old Kelly compiled a 34-6 record in three-plus seasons at Cincinnati and was twice named Big East coach of the year.
It remains unclear whether Kelly will be on the sideline when Cincinnati faces Florida on New Year’s Day.
Notre Dame fired Weis after the team posted a 6-6 record in 2009. Weis was 35-27 in his five seasons at Notre Dame.
