The results from last weekend’s presidential election in Romania could change following a decision made by the country’s constitutional court to recount voided votes.
While President Traian Basescu defeated Social Democrat candidate Mircea Geoana by 70,000 votes that margin was significantly less than the 138,000 ballots that were voided during the process. Geoana claimed widespread voter rigging during the election and had already called for a new election.
A statement was released by the constitutional court announcing the recount, noting “The court... decided by a majority of votes... to re-examine the annulled votes and have the Central Election Bureau recount them to establish whether there are any differences between the signed ballots and reality.’
With the recount now ordered Romania remains under a caretaker government, a body that has been in place since October. A new prime minister cannot be named or new government formed until a president has been appointed.
