At least 48 hostages remain held by a group of armed gunmen in the southern Philippines as negotiators continue to work toward securing their release.
The hostages are being held by members of the Manobo tribe in eastern Mindanao and while there has been no public announcement concerning demands their leader, Ondo Perez, has called for murder charges against his group to be dropped.
As many as 75 hostages were taken early Thursday morning but within hours many of those individuals were released, a sign that the group was willing to work with negotiators. While they appear willing to work with the negotiators Perez was said to have issued a warning that if their demands were not met the lives of the hostages would be at risk.
Police have said the hostage takers belong to a group of former government-armed militia on the island of Mindanao.
