Remains of Former Cyprus Leader Stolen from Graveyard

The remains of former Cyprus leader Tassos Papadopoulos have been stolen by a group of thieves who apparently broke into his grave at the Deftera village cemetery in Nicosia overnight.

Papadopoulos died of lung cancer in December 2008 at the age of 74.

According to local media reports the thieves are thought o have worked throughout the night during a downpour. They had to lift a large marble slab and then unearth the coffin before they were able to remove the corpse, an act Republic of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias called ”sacrilege.”

There has been no motive released for the desecration other than a UN-backed peace effort to reunite the Turkish and Greek parts of the island, a move that Papadopoulos adamantly opposed. Papadopoulos convinced Greek Cypriots to vote against a UN peace plan referendum, a referendum that had the support of the Turkish Cypriots.
