Students See Benefits from College Prep Camps While in High School
The benefits of college prep camps are seen before a student reaches college according to the president of a leading college preparation camp.
Bobbi DePorter, president and co-founder of SuperCamp, a college prep program for high school students, says that students who acquire college-level learning and life skills are able to apply these new skills while still in high school. She sites research results from high school students who have attended SuperCamp.
"Our research with over 6,000 SuperCamp graduates shows that well over 70 percent of them improve their grades the very next year and report increases in confidence and self-esteem," said DePorter. "Additionally, we have studies that show far more of our graduates going directly into a four-year college from high school than the national average."
The college prep learning skills at SuperCamp include techniques to improve reading speed and comprehension, problem solving, critical thinking, and studying and test-taking effectiveness. Life skills that help the students both in college and in high school include such areas as communication, leadership, motivation, conflict resolution, and time management.
SuperCamp also puts high school students and middle school students in a college frame of mind by holding the majority of its summer academic programs on college campuses, which include Brown, Stanford and UCLA. The one non-college location in 2010 is Lake Forest Academy in Chicago, a leading college prep school.
Students who attend any of SuperCamp's 7-, 8- or 10-day programs reside on-campus, staying in dorms, eating in the cafeterias and participating in all activities in various classrooms, main rooms and outdoor venues. In addition, students have free time in which they can use each school's recreational facilities.
