Tom Glavine pitched six strong innings and Paul Lo Duca went 2-5 driving in three runs as the New York Mets (1-0) opened the MLB regular season with a 6-1 victory over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals (0-1).
For Glavine the victory marked his 291st career win moving him within six of tying Bobby Matthews for 23rd on the all-time wins list.
The Mets got on the board in the top of the third after a Carlos Delgado double off of Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter scored Lo Duca and Carlos Beltran.
Lo Duca then drove in a pair in the top of the fourth when his single plated Shawn Green and Jose Valentin. Beltran followed with a single to score Jose Reyes and the Mets were up 5-0.
St. Louis finally put a run up in the bottom of the sixth when Skip Schumaker came around to score on a one-out David Eckstein double. Preston Wilson followed Eckstein’s double with a single to center but Beltran’s throw to the plate nailed Eckstein trying to score.
New York was able to tack on another run in the top of the ninth when Lo Duca singled home David Newhan making the score 6-1. Billy Wagner came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and gave up a pair of singles but closed out the game without giving up a run.
Glavine gave up six hits while striking out two and walking just one in his six innings of work.
Chris Carpenter struggled on the mound for the Cardinals. The ace of the staff gave up five runs on nine hits over six innings of work.
