Touchstone on Lake Muskoka Supports Literacy in the Workplace

The Workforce Development Board and Literacy Ontario Central South have teamed up to fight for literacy in the workplace. Their literacy campaign, highlighted by a television ad running on local stations, asks business owners to join the fight. Business owners like Walter Thompson.

Thompson is the president of The GenerX Corporation, the company developing Touchstone on Lake Muskoka. To help the workplace literacy campaign, Touchstone has graciously donated a weekend getaway for two in the Muskokas. The prize will be given away at the Celebrating Literacy Breakfast, being held at the Holiday Inn Peterborough Waterfront on Friday, March 30th.

“We like to help wherever we can,” says Thompson. “Literacy in the workplace is an important issue and fundamental in the development of positive working environments for all members of an organization.”

As a real estate developer, Thompson deals with a lot of people in the construction industry. In a 2003 adult literacy study, it was found that 54 percent of Canadians in the construction industry scored below adequate levels of literacy. That translates into nearly 200,000 people.

“We are all very fortunate to live and work in Ontario,” says Thompson. “We need to make greater efforts to ensure that everyone in this province has the opportunity to improve their literacy skills so they can maximize their own opportunities.”
