Abkhazia Holding First Presidential Election Since Independence Recognized by Russia

Abkhazia is holding its first presidential election since Russia recognized the region’s independence from Georgia last year.

Five candidates are running for president, each one supporting strong ties with Moscow. It was Russia who came to Abkhazia’s aid last year when they, along with South Ossetia, broke from Georgia. Russia waged a brief war with Georgia, eventually securing the two regions independence.

While Russia, Venezuela and Nicaragua have recognized the independence of Abkhazia the rest of the world has not. Georgia has already stated that the presidential election is illegal and will not recognize the leader.

Incumbent Sergei Bagapsh is believed to have the advantage in the election but whoever wins will stay close to Russia as they provide Abkhazia with security as well as the majority of their budget.
