NFL Scores: New Orleans Saints Survive Again, Stop Atlanta Falcons to Remain Perfect on the Year

Drew Brees was 31/40 passing for 296 yards and three touchdowns, Reggie Bush had 79 total yards and a pair of TD receptions and Jonathan Vilma came up with a huge stop on a fourth down late in the game to lift the New Orleans Saints (13-0) past the Atlanta Falcons (6-7) 26-23 on Sunday to lock up a first-round bye in the NFC playoffs.

Atlanta put the first points of the game on the board as Matt Bryant closed the Falcons opening drive with a 36-yard field goal but the Saints countered with a 33-yard field goal from Garrett Hartley to even the score at 3-3. Bryant managed to put the Falcons back in front with a 30-yard field goal and Atlanta carried a 6-3 advantage into the second.

Bush then put the Saints in front 10-6 when he went 6-yards off a Brees pass and then Brees hooked up with Marques Colston on a 3-yard TD toss but Hartley’s extra point missed and New Orleans was up 16-6. Atlanta tacked on a 27-yard field goal from Bryant just before the half to cut the Saints lead to 16-9.

New Orleans opened the third quarter with a solid drive that was capped with a 21-yard touchdown after Brees hit Bush and the Saints looked to be rolling at 23-9. Atlanta answered the Saints score with a touchdown of their own as Chris Redman hooked up with Michael Jenkins on a 50-yard scoring strike to get the Falcons back to within 23-16 and that score stood heading into the fourth.

Atlanta managed to even the score at 23-23 early in the fourth when Jason Snelling pounded it in from 4-yards out and the Falcons looked to have the momentum but the Saints got a 38-yard field goal from Hartley with just under five minutes left in the game to go up 26-23. On Atlanta’s next possession Redman was picked-off but the Falcons defense forced a field goal attempt and New Orleans opted for a fake that failed. Atlanta had one more shot with just under two minutes but on a fourth and two Redman dumped a quick pass to Snelling who was stopped by Vilma to end the game.

New Orleans was 8-12 on third down conversions and had a 13 minute time of possession advantage over the Falcons.
