NFL Scores: New England Patriots Keep AFC East Lead, Beat Carolina Panthers Despite 3 TOs

Tom Brady threw for 192 yards and a touchdown, Laurence Maroney collected 94 yards on the ground and Wes Welker had 105 yards receiving on ten catches as the New England Patriots (8-5) overcame three turnovers to beat the Carolina Panthers (5-8) 20-10 on Sunday to maintain their one-game lead in the AFC East.

It was Carolina who jumped out in front 7-0 when Matt Moore, filling in for Jake Delhomme, tossed a41-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith for the only points of the opening quarter. The Patriots offense continued to stall for most of the second quarter but they managed to even the score at 7-7 when Kevin Faulk punched it in from three yards out.

Scoring was at a premium in the third quarter as well but the Patriots found a way to get on the board late in the frame as Brady hit Benjamin Watson on a 5-yard strike to give New England their first lead at 14-7 with 1:06 left in the quarter.

Carolina trimmed their deficit to 14-10 early in the fourth when John Kasay kicked a 36-yard field goal but the Patriots answered with a 48-yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski. New England then iced the game with just under four minutes left when Gostkowski added a 47-yard field goal.

Despite putting up 377 yards of total offense the Patriots were just 3-11 on third down conversions but the Panthers were just as bad, converting on 3-13 third down attempts.
