Major League Baseball Scoreboard: National League April 2

Marlins, Braves, Brewers, Reds, Diamondbacks and Pirates all grab opening day victories.

Miguel Cabrera went 3-4 with a homerun and a double while driving in four and Dontrelle Willis threw six innings giving up one earned run while striking out three as the Florida Marlins (1-0) beat the Washington Nationals (0-1) 9-2. Hanley Ramirez went 4-6 in the leadoff spot for the Marlins, collecting two doubles and scoring four times.

Edgar Renteria hit a pair of homeruns and drove in three and Brian McCann hit a two-run blast to lift the Atlanta Braves (1-0) past the Philadelphia Phillies (0-1) in ten innings. Renteria hit a game-tying homer in the eight and followed that with a go-ahead bomb in the tenth to give the Braves the win. John Smoltz went six innings striking out seven while giving up three earned runs. The revamped bullpen pitched four scoreless innings for Atlanta to shut the door on Philly.

Ben Sheets threw a complete game two-hitter and J.J. Hardy went 3-4 with an RBI as the Milwaukee Brewers (1-0) beat the Los Angeles Dodgers (0-1) 7-1. Sheets gave up a homerun to Jeff Kent in the top of the second and then retired the next 22 Dodgers he faced before Brady Clark doubled with one out in the ninth. The Brewers ace threw 106 pitches and didn’t walk a batter in earning the win.

Adam Dunn hit a pair of homeruns and drove in three, Ken Griffey Jr. went 2-3 and scored a run and Aaron Harang threw seven innings giving up just one run as the Cincinnati Reds (1-0) topped the Chicago Cubs (0-1) 5-1. Carlos Zambrano was roughed up in his first outing of the year; the Cubs ace gave up all five runs in five innings while walking five batters.

Eric Byrnes single in the top of the eight scored the tying and go-ahead runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks (1-0) went on to beat the Colorado Rockies (0-1) 8-6. Byrnes went 3-5 with a double while Orlando Hudson finished 3-4 with a pair of RBIs in the win. Brandon Webb threw five innings and was tagged for eight hits and five runs before turning the ball over to the bullpen.

Jason Bay hit a two-run homer in the top of the tenth to give the Pittsburgh Pirates (1-0) a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the Houston Astros (0-1). Houston led 2-0 after seven but Nate McLouth hit a pinch hit homerun in the eight off Roy Oswalt and Xavier Nady hit a two-out bomb off of closer Brad Lidge in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Luke Scott accounted for both Astros runs with a two-run homer in the fifth.
